2017 UNEG Evaluation Week - High-Level Event

Overview

2017 High-Level Event at the UNEG Evaluation Week

One of the key features of the Evaluation Week is the ‘High-Level Event,’ where a group of prominent development thinkers and practitioners are invited to discuss and directly engage UNEG members on issues of critical importance to today’s development agenda. The High-Level Event at the 2017 Evaluation Week (16th May 2017) focused on the theme “Eradicating Poverty and Promoting Prosperity in a Changing World.” This topic corresponds to the theme of the 2017 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, convened every year under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. The HLPF is a central platform for following up and reviewing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Eradicating poverty in all its forms remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity and panellists at the high-level event discussed the critical role of the follow-up and assessment of the sustainable development goals in advancing shared prosperity.  Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary, Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Dazhu Yang,  Deputy-Director General for Technical Cooperation, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Marco Segone, UNEG Chair; Director, UN Women Independent Evaluation Office welcomed panellists and participants. The President of the UN General Assembly, Peter Thomson, delivered the opening remarks. Panellists  included David Muchoki Kanja, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Internal Oversight Services; Natalia Nikitenko, Member of Parliament, Kyrgyzstan and Global Parliamentarian Forum for Evaluation; Per Øyvind Bastøe, Director of Evaluation, Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and Chair of OECD/DAC Evaluation Network; and Ziad Moussa, President, International Organization for Cooperation in Evaluation & Co-Chair of EvalPartners.
